A Pencil’s Purpose

There was a pencil on the desk.

Its lead was rough and cold.

It told a tale of constant use,

A life of stories told.

And though it was a fine old tool,

Alone, it lacked control,

Until the writer took it up,

And gave it a great goal.

Yes, then it had a life-well lived,

Its efforts were well spent.

Now, it fulfilled its purpose,

No matter where it went.

I, too, am like that pencil,

To fulfill the Author’s plan,

I faithfully will do my bit,

However small or grand.

And though I must be sharpened,

And tested by the blade,

I know I will be stronger

To do what I was made

And though I may write many things,

These words—they aren’t mine,

For when I’m in the Author’s hand,

I fulfill His great design!

This is a poem I wrote that defines my purpose for this blog and my greater purpose in writing! Inspired by the comparison in Psalm 45:1, I find that pens and pencils are wonderful illustrations of who I am! Here on my blog, you will find original poems, devotionals, and other thoughts that I want to share.
